Maintenance

Track and Bearings
  • Track and bearings maintenanceUsing a spatula or similar (not your finger), apply a small amount (typically a ΒΌ teaspoon) of white petroleum jelly (vaseline) or similar lubricant to the inner lip of each side of the track.
  • Ensure that the wheels pass through the lubricant and it is distributed evenly along the track.
  • Put additional lubricant around the bearings. Lubricant reduces wear, improves smoothness and further protects against corrosion of track and bearings.
  • Remove all surface contaminants by wiping all visible track surfaces with a damp soft cloth and mild detergent, then wipe clean with a clean cloth.
  • In severe environments, apply a thin film of a corrosive preventative such as CRC Marine 66, Innox or WD40, by wiping with a soft cloth moistened with one of these products.
  • Stainless-steel bearings are manufactured from hardened-grade stainless steel and although this material performs considerably better than plated steels, it is still susceptible to corrosion unless maintained as described above.

Hangers, Pivots and Hinges
  • Drop Bolts maintenanceWipe down the visible surfaces with warm soapy water on a soft rag and then rinse off by wiping with a clean damp rag.
  • A light spray application of a corrosion preventative such as CRC Marine 66, Innox or WD 40, followed by a light wipe with a dry cloth to remove excess, is recommended to all hangers, pivots and hinges.
  • This will help maintain the original lustre of the stainless-steel finish.
  • Be careful not to get these products on the timberwork itself as they may cause staining.

Drop Bolts
  • Drop Bolts maintenanceSpray application of a corrosion preventative such as CRC Marine 66, Innox or WD 40 to the sliding pin inside the bolt and to the lock cylinder is recommended. There are access holes or slots on all drop bolt products so this can be done with out removing the locks from the doors.

Frequency
The procedures mentioned above need to be carried out as often as is necessary to prevent deterioration in the installed environment, however we recommend the following minimum frequency of application:

  • General environments every 6 months
  • Marine and industrial environments every 3 months

Hardware adjustment
All the hardware is adjustable however if the structure supporting the bi fold door is secure and the foundations are sound, there should be no need for adjusting the doors after installation is complete.

Weep Holes
Copper weep holes are positioned in the sill to vent water build up in bottom channel.

  • To insure the weep holes work properly they my need cleaning with a thin piece of wire to dislodge any build up of foreign matter.

Staining / Painting
As a general rule bradworthy Bi folds apply 2 coats of either paint or stain prior to glazing the joinery product leaving the last 2 coats for the client after the joinery item has been installed.

This ensures the maximum life expectancy because the joinery item is sealed preventing moisture penetration.

  • If painting we advise the client to apply the last two coats within a maximum time period of 2 weeks
  • If staining we advise the client to apply the last two coats within a maximum time period of 4 weeks
  • We use Sikkens Stains because of our personal experience over the last 24 years.
  • Bradworthy Bi folds use Filter 7 externally with TS Interior internally using HLS only on door sills
  • Before you apply any paint or stain the client is advised to ensure the timber face is completely free of any dirt or impurity that my effect the new coats adhesion.

Points to be adhered to when staining Bradworthy Bi folds:

  • Before staining clean with warm water, do not sand the doors at this point.
  • No more than 2 extra coats of Filter 7 externally. (Externally meaning all surfaces visible when viewing the doors in a closed position from outside).
  • Do not sand between coats. The stain is very thick so be careful of runs that may not be evident straight away.
  • Always apply 2 coats internally, then if needed, a very light sand and 1 or 2 extra coats of TS Interior.
  • Never apply Filter 7 to the bi fold sill. Use HLS only on door sills

Please note:

  • When staining, external joinery in direct sunlight should be cleaned, then recoated every 18 months.
  • For optimum penetration all Painting/staining is applied by hand.
Sikkens stains can be purchased from Bradworthy Bi Folds
